If we’re in the beginning stages of starting a new business, then we know stress! There are those nagging thoughts that the business may fold. What if there isn’t enough money to pay the bills? Will we be able to make payroll? Will it adversely affect our spouse and children? How much time should we spend working in the average week? Not all stress is bad, however, and handling stress is easier than we might think.

Entrepreneurs and stress can go hand in hand. Nevertheless, problems start when stress begins to take a toll on everyday life. As much as we tell ourselves that things will be fine, there is that little hint of doubt that keeps popping up.

When stress is OK.

It has been proven time and again that some amount of stress is actually a good thing. Stress can help our brains function at peak performance. A certain amount of stress also helps humans adapt to certain situations. This ability to adapt is what has kept the human race on this Earth for so long. So we all need a bit of stress to keep us on our toes.

When stress is too much.

There are different levels of stress. We now know that a certain amount of stress is good for us. So when does stress become destructive? There are actually signs that we must watch for.

1. Sleep patterns are disturbed.

If we were always a great sleeper and now can’t sleep, or our minds race and we can’t seem to calm down enough to fall asleep, then we’re probably overstressed.

2. Eating patterns go astray.

For some of us, eating patterns change to where we just do not get hungry. In fact, we may even skip meals to get more work done. Others of us begin to overeat. Indeed, stress can cause many symptoms, including both of those, so neither of those is good.

3. We get ill more often.

As stress builds on us each day, we tend to get more aches and pains. Then there are those of us who will be contracting cold after cold. Stress can adversely affect our immune systems.

4. We lose concentration and get sidetracked easily.

Lack of concentration can hurt us when we are performing tasks that need concentration. Our attention spans become shorter and shorter.

5. Mood swings hit unexpectedly.

Being under too much stress can make us experience mood swings. Lack of sleep and not eating right probably brings on the erratic moods.

The above are typical situations that arise from too much stress. However, if we feel overwhelmed more of the time than not, we must get medical advice. Often, there could be an underlying problem that stress has brought out.

How Entrepreneurs are handling stress

Handling stress: Go from stressed to best!

There is stress in everyday life, but the more we know about handling stress, the better we will be in the long run. Here are some methods of handling stress and some techniques for stress reduction.

1. Exercise!

Yes, we may work long hours, but do we actually get enough exercise? The answer is probably no. Yet it’s vital for our own sanity to make sure we get enough exercise each day.

2. Remain positive.

Positive thinking is key! I can’t stress that enough (pun intended!). If we remain positive and make sure to count the things we are grateful for, the less the chance stress will have to get its grip on us. When feeling more anxiety than usual, figure out what’s causing it. We have a tendency to worry about things and make “mountains out of molehills,” but positive thinking is a method for handling

We have a tendency to worry about things and make “mountains out of molehills,” but positive thinking is a method for handling stress that will take us all the way to the summit!

3. Take time to enjoy life.

Yes, entrepreneurs have stress, and the best method of handling stress is to take time away for pleasure and leisure. Sometimes just taking a few hours off to do something different will brighten our moods. What about sneaking away to lunch with a good friend?

4. Be around like-minded people.

Entrepreneurs know stress, and fellow entrepreneurs can be great sounding boards. We know what it’s like to begin a business adventure. If we find that fellow entrepreneurs are using us as sounding boards, listen and show that we understand. Handling stress this way improves the situation for all involved!

5. Eat well.

Yes, we all know this one! But we have to make sure that we actually follow through with the eating well. It can be hard at the end of a long day to make something healthy. If we know we will be having long business days, then try to plan ahead to have quick and easy meals that are nutritious.

6. Most of all, be grateful.

Try to find some quiet time each day and think about the things we have to be grateful for. Often, the best time of the day to reflect is early in the morning when the world is still quiet. Having the ability to be grateful goes a long way in remaining positive in the entrepreneur journey.

Stress is conquered!

Let’s be entrepreneurs who know how to handle stress! By taking the time to learn how to reduce stress, we will be doing ourselves and our businesses a lot of good. After all, if the owner of the company doesn’t know the correct direction for the company, how can others be expected to learn and follow suit?

When we become entrepreneurs who keep stress under control and enjoy life, our fellow business companions will be looking to us for guidance. Let’s be available for them. Those who have never tried to start a business may have no idea about the stress and questions that come with the territory.

Time and again, we as entrepreneurs may have to put the brakes on ourselves enough to stop and smell the roses. By stressing out and becoming scatterbrained, we risk losing our positive thinking and even our identity. So don’t let stress have control over the good and power we have to offer to those who may be seeking our product or service.

Above all else, keep that winning attitude! Indeed, simply by deciding we want to own our own business, we’ve already proven we’re self-confident, hardworking, and maybe even visionary. We might just invent the newest product or service that the world is looking for!
