The Nobel Prize for medicine has been awarded for a research which will put you to sleep. But definitely in a good way.

The Nobel Prizes are normally given to scientists who have achieved highly specific work in their lives. However, this time, their discoveries were about one of the most fundamental things in the world. It was about sleep and how it actually changes our lives.

The scientists claim that this discovery should be used in order to understand the mysteries of sleep. It will help other discoveries as well.

This could actually change how we understand the connection between our body and time.

The winners say that with understanding the way the clock in our bodies ticks and synchronizes with the sun, we may have the ability to use that same process to improve it. Some of the most fundamental parts of our life, such as our energy, health, fertility and some other things are affected by the circadian rhythms. Understanding it can actually improve it.

Michael Hastings of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, says that before getting the genes, everything is like a black box. But once we get them, everything else is possible.

Nowadays, scientists understand that the body clocks influence alertness. Also hunger, fertility, metabolism, mood and some other physiological conditions. Some researchers have started studying the implications of erratic sleeping and working patterns. Also, children who stay up late during the night.

People are learning more and more the effects of not following the biological clock.

A 73-year-old professor named Rosbash said that he worked to better understand the watch which actually keeps the time in our brains.

He also explains that a person can recognize circadian rhythms. This is proved by the fact that he/she gets sleepy at 10 or 11 at night. Then wakes up at 7 in the morning. At 3 or 4 in the afternoon, he/she needs a cup of coffee. So that is actually the clock.

The fact that every one of us travels over multiple time zones, means that our body will be screwed up for a few days until we readjust. All that could be a manifestation of your circadian clock.

The trio won the Nobel Prize, which worth 9 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million).

Rosbash also told Reuters that it literally took his breath away. Shocking! He also says that it is great for basic science. It also had a tremendous amount of practical impact yet, it is really one very basic discovery. It is good to have the attention on this kind of basic work.

The work of the three scientists has been focused on flies.

They stood in as a type of one simple organism. The discoveries from the study were applied for the entire animal kingdom, which also included humans.

The Nobel Prize laureates from this year have been studying this fundamental problem. They also solved the mystery of how an inner clock situated in our bodies can actually anticipate daily fluctuations between night and day in order to optimize our behavior and physiology.

Young said that some genetic mutations were discovered in people with a chronic sleeping problem.

Jeffrey C. Hall, who is one of the three winners of the Nobel Prize, said that this discovery had opened the opportunity to improve the health and lives of people.

Hall also said that once the scientists have understood how the body clock normally works, they were given a chance. A chance to influence the internal workings of the body clock and possibly to improve the well–being of a person.
