The biggest challenges of our lives come right before a major change is on the horizon — a job change, getting married, or adopting a new habit. One way to help meet a challenging change is to envision your life as a grand story in which you succeed at that challenge. Then you can change your life.
You are the hero of your story. Therefore, you can change your life successfully only if you do the right thing, as a hero would. The only way to do so is after you become firmly convinced of your own abilities and skills.
At first, with uncertainty, you fall into fear-and-doubt mode — a self-perpetuating cycle that lasts until, as a hero, you break out of it. Perhaps you can imagine how the greatest stories of all time would have turned out if their heroes had succumbed to low self-confidence and self-doubt.
Imagine Harry Potter afraid of Voldemort, quitting the battle for “next time,” and instead of fighting, scrolling on Instagram! What a parody! That’s an excellent metaphor for life today, where people tend to spend more time on social media than on their challenges.
You can change your life by adopting a new habit. But the real life change comes from deep inside you when your hero persona realizes its strengths and weaknesses.
The next time you feel like giving up on something with an excuse like “it’s okay to fail,” “I’ll do it later,” “I don’t deserve such a harsh job or life,” etc., then at the end of each excuse add a “but” and transform it to a positive outcome.
1. You can change your life by changing your old life into your new true story.
You probably have a picture of yourself in your head now. How do you look? Are you the hero who is triumphing proudly with head held high? Or are you instead just “poor little me”?
What song are you singing silently to yourself? Don’t be the type of person who quits easily and watches Netflix! You can change your life here, at this moment, only if you take this story seriously. Commit yourself to a higher purpose!
So create the story of change, imagine yourself as the hero, and start going forward, never backward. When it seems like the story is fading, feel the change. Bring back the triumphant feeling you got when you first started the story.
Does it feel right? Never allow yourself to fail by abandoning your story. And also don’t allow fear to push you away from your life path. You can change your life’s cycle of getting stuck in self-doubt and anxious thinking only if you stay loyal to your story. Indeed, be the hero!
2. But how can you change your life if the story works against you?
Very simple! Change the damn story! Create a better one. Become the hero of the story. Sing your song of inspiration every day. Be proud of it. Always be pushing forward. Never forget that the physical world isn’t the real limitation. If you don’t know a skill, you can always learn it, and then master it!
3. The only limitation is your belief system.
You can change your life by adopting a strong belief in your story. Accept it with all your heart and being.
Life is too short to get stuck in fear and doubt. Why not be happy? We are all gifted in our own ways, so if we dig a little deeper in ourselves and read some good books, we’ll each find our unique purpose on Earth.
That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it… Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.
~ Steve Jobs
When you find out who you are and who you want to be, you can easily plan your life according to your hero story. Don’t listen to others who may have quit on their own stories or just decided to live someone else’s life. You are the hero who can change your life for good.
Try to feel each moment from the inside and block the distractions from your story. Feel the power of love. You are caring for you. Feel the heart pumping. Feel the everlasting energy in you. You’ll notice how everything vanishes: fear, doubt — everything!
You can and should use your renewed vigor for good things, things for which you’re passionate. You’re the writer of your story and the composer of your song. Use the energy and love you have to write the best story and compose the best song for you!
The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.
